Using Mandarin as an example (because it’s the most commonly used - also because I’m a bad kid and never learned my dialect), him/her/it or genderless, while having different characters (他,她,它)are all pronounced the exact same way, tā. Which means that in verbal conversation, it’s possible to be unsure about someone’s gender, while still referring to them correctly.
